ধনতেরাস ২০২৫
Dhanteras in 2025 will be celebrated on Saturday, October 18th.
Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival. It falls on the thirteenth lunar day of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu month of Kartik.
Significance of Dhanteras:
- Worship of Lord Dhanvantari: This day is primarily dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and the god of Ayurveda. He is believed to have emerged from the churning of the cosmic ocean ("Samudra Manthan") carrying a pot of Amrita (the elixir of immortality). Worshipping him is considered auspicious for good health and well-being.
- Goddess Lakshmi and Kubera: Alongside Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and Lord Kubera, the treasurer of the gods, are also worshipped on this day.
- Auspicious for Buying: Dhanteras is considered highly auspicious for purchasing precious metals like gold and silver, as well as new utensils and other valuable items. It is believed that these purchases bring good luck and prosperity to the household.
Rituals and Celebrations:
- Cleaning and Decoration: Homes and workplaces are thoroughly cleaned and decorated with colorful rangoli patterns and diyas (oil lamps) to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Small footprints made of rice flour and vermilion powder are often drawn at the entrance to symbolize her arrival.
- Lakshmi Puja: In the evening, families perform Lakshmi Puja, offering prayers, sweets, and flowers to the goddess to seek her blessings for wealth and prosperity.
- Lighting Diyas: Diyas are lit throughout the night in honor of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanvantari.
- Buying Precious Items: Purchasing gold, silver, or new utensils is a significant tradition on this day. Many believe it attracts good fortune.
- Donations: Some people also engage in acts of charity and donate to the less fortunate on this day.
- Yama Deepam: In some traditions, a lamp is lit and placed outside the house to honor Yama, the god of death, to ward off untimely demise.
Dhanteras is a vibrant festival that signifies the importance of health and wealth in our lives and marks the joyful beginning of the Diwali festivities.
